Do you have any ideas as to how we can improve the template system? Please post them here!

Ability to edit templates instead of saving over them with a current project.

Hi bwebb, great feedback. Can you share which company you are with so that I can add your feedback to our internal feature request list? You can also email me if you would like to keep this confidential.

It would be nice and save a lot of time by making the temlate a smarter tool - so that when you creat a new project the template also asks additional questions such as 1) team per role defined in the template plan, 2) selection of default type of time management (fixed duration, fixed work, units), 3) selection of default - how to add new tasks following activation - either as draft tasks or activated 4) definition whether if the project manager by default manages the whole project - ie covers the complete scope of the project 5) defintion of reviewers by default 6) defintion whether the reviewer will by default receive email notifiations of new occurances 7) defintion if the reviewers by default overlook the whole project - ie covers the complete scope of the project , 8) defintion of dates - beging and end dates both 9) allow default budget definition.--together this can make new project creation fast easy and customized

Thanks Unicorn for all of the comments! Many of those items are handled when you start creating a project from a template. So you are saying that instead of setting up those properties when starting a project from a template, that you would rather be prompted when saving a template for default information? I have a few comments on each item regarding how we do them now:

1.) When creating a project from a template, you have an option to bring in the same team of resources or leave it blank (just a checkbox).
2.) Scheduling policy (fixed work, duration, etc.) is saved in the template.
3.) Can select draft/active when you are creating a project from a template.
4.) Can select PM when you are creating a project from a template.
5.) Reviewers are saved in the template, but you need to check the "Resources" box when creating a new template to bring them in.
6.) Will be addressed with subscriptions in a future release.
7.) Can do this to some degree now, current templates remember where reviewers are assigned.
8.) Can define a project start/end date when create a project based on a template. Also all manual dates get saved in the template. Dependencies also get saved in the template. This one I think we adequately address right now.
9.) Budget I believe also gets saved in the template (at least the planned budget column).

Hello Josh Santos
Only some of the items are handled -in a template.

Regarding the suggestion for team and manager roles being part of the template - I did not see your responce - I would like to make a template where the roles are defined and when setting up a new project I would be prompted to define the team playes as per the templates role list - the resources' names would be then entered and replace the role names.

Yes I suggest that set up of properties be defined ahead of time saved in the template - with out need to reset each time - resetting would be done only when needed. Those settings could either be in the template or inthe organizations settings.

When starting a project from a template, I would add additional properties to be set
1.) When creating a project from a template, you have an option to bring in the same team of resources or leave it blank (just a checkbox) .Yes - this is a drop down to select when allocating - pls see the suggestion above..
2.) Scheduling policy (fixed work, duration, etc.) is saved in the template :yes it is saved but it is not prompted - only when you find out that there are problems.
3.) Can select draft/active when you are creating a project from a template.
yes but once activated the template - is a project - any new items added following activation are added as active and not as draft items- I suggest to allow a prompt how to add items to a template following its activation
4.) Can select PM when you are creating a project from a template. - No if I am not the selected person but I am creating the project - the system by default puts me as the PM - the acting manager in the project is the one that is updating the the tasks
5.) Reviewers are saved in the template, but you need to check the "Resources" box when creating a new template to bring them in. - do you mean - you need to assign them to each task - there is now overall assignment of reviewer for the full scope
in some part it is covered you can select either start or either end date - but not the two- the manual dates - I think should be dependent on the start and end dates and the dependencies - the behavior could be prompted
9.) Budget I believe also gets saved in the template (at least the planned budget column).

Ah, I see what you mean for numbers 1, 3, and 4. As for number 5, you can assign a reviewer to the entire project (or a group of reviewers), and when you save that as a template that reviewer information gets saved in the template. If you choose to bring resources into the template, then the reviewer information carries over as well.

An undo feature would be a nice enhancement too.

And I think Bwebb's got a great idea!

Great idea, we (PeopleAdmin) would love to see this "directly edit project templates" feature as well.
